Race Tips / Location & Food Ideas / "Do Not Go Outside the Cones"

Have done this race 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 (my "Birthday" present race). Almost got DQ'd in 2019 (but did not - whew). Went outside the cones on the highway when another biker split dangerously between the middle of myself and another biker to my right (and making me kick out left around a cone; braking would not have been possible since I was in the aero bars and wouldn't have reached in time). The cone'd off area is a narrow strip on the road and patrolled by the referees. I had to stop to plead my case with the referee and then stop again in the penalty tent. If you do the race, be sure to stay within the cones! Otherwise, a beautiful race. Swim course is pleasant and good temperature, run course is flat and ~90% gravel (although there is one slight uphill section, you do come right back down it), and bike course has one major hill near the end of the one loop course). Key is to stay at the Howard Johnson Hotel - closest hotel to the park and then if you finish early enough, you can ask for late check out, shower, and then catch the ferry (if coming back to WA state). There is a Whole Foods not too far from Howard Johnson as well, where I had all my meals leading up. The first couple of years I just ate at the restaurants, but that was not only pricey, but couldn't control the quality/quantity of food. I know some people have just camped out in the park or their car, but I believe they started cracking down on that.
