March 11, 2019 - 3rd Place Open Masters Male
This race has a self seeded pool swim so when I saw the line-up I was really anxious about having to pass two people that were seeded ahead of me in the swim that I knew for a fact I was faster than! I kept visualizing having to make an aggressive pass and really didn't want to have to do that.
Thankfully the race director Jeremy said it was ok to swap positions. I asked one of the two guy to swap and he agreed. That really made me feel a lot better. I did have to pass one person but that was an easy pass thankfully. I had a good swim.
I got on the bike and couldn't quite get the right gear. Maybe I have a two cog change in the cassette where I was riding. I am going to have to check. If so I am going to get a different cassette for flatter races. In one gear I was spinning a little to high and in the other I wasn't getting the turnover I wanted. I kept swapping back and forth between the two. But, in the end I had a good ride and decent numbers compared to last year too.
Then the run...The first 1/4 to 1/2 mile every stride each of my calves were trying to cramp. Maybe I didn't drink eough infinit on the bike. Will watch out for that at the next race. It finally settled out and by the end of mile 2 I was feeling pretty good. Mile three was the pace I wanted for the whole race but I couldn't get going on the first two.
